How Much Does It Cost to Get an Online EdD?

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average cost of all graduate programs was $19,214 in 2018-2019. Our list of the most affordable online EdD programs features manually researched tuition rates that are significantly lower than the national average, ranging from $4,350 to $8,204 per year. This is because the NCES provides tuition numbers that aren't specific to online students, and what an online student will pay can be substantially different from what a student enrolled on-campus might pay.

Since the average length of an online EdD degree is three years, the total cost of an online program from our most affordable EdD list ranges from $13,050 to $24,612. These rates do not include textbook costs or other mandatory fees, such as technology fees, which can range from $50-$100 per course.

There are many options available to lower the overall costs associated with your education degree, including loans, programs, and scholarships, which are outlined in the next section.

Funding an Online EdD Program

Doctoral students, including those in a distance education program, can apply for various funding sources that can help offset tuition costs. These sources include federal financial aid, grants, and scholarships.

Federal Financial Aid

You should consider submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Graduate students, including students enrolled in online phd programs, are eligible for various federal student aid awards, including low-interest, fixed-rate loans like Direct Unsubsidized Loans.

Direct Unsubsidized Loans require borrowers to pay interest that begins to accrue once the loan is disbursed; however, you have a six-month grace period after graduation before you must begin making payments towards your loan.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)

Offered by the U.S Department of Education, the PSLF program forgives your remaining Direct Loan amount after you have made 120 monthly payments. To qualify, you must work full-time for a qualifying employer, such as the government or non-profit organizations.

Scholarships

Many schools offer scholarships to distance learning students based on need or academic merit. You can contact your school's admissions office to determine if you are eligible for any institutional scholarships. Another option is to apply to private scholarships to help fund your online EdD program. Kappa Delta Pi is an international honor society in education that offers a range of scholarships for its members. Some scholarships available for doctoral students in education are the Hollis L. Caswell Laureate Scholarship ($3,000) and the Marcella L. Kysilka Doctoral Student Scholarship ($2,000).

Common Online EdD Courses

Several common online courses that students in an online EdD program may take are listed below. While the course titles vary across programs, the information and topics covered may be similar.

  • Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment: In this course, students learn about best practices in educational instruction and design. The curriculum may cover strategies for overcoming barriers to learning and improving student performance. Students also review educational laws, policies, and standards.
  • Leadership and Leader Development: Coursework in this subject teaches students how to be effective leaders in the educational environment. Students learn how to communicate and facilitate change in an organization so they feel prepared to take on leadership roles. They may also review various leadership models and perspectives.
  • Policy Development and Implementation: The course covers topics in policy implementation, evaluation, and processes for educational improvement. Students discuss and critically analyze educational policy at the state and national levels. They may also learn how policies are formed and how to work with policy advocates.
  • Research, Theory, Design & Methods: This course covers several research methods, including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method design. Students will learn the ethical implications of research design. They may also be required to outline a research study or write a methods section of a research paper.
